Woman drowns in backyard pool

BEVERLY HILLS _ A 77-year-old woman died Tuesday in an apparent accidental drowning in the backyard pool of her Beverly Hills residence. Ronda Hemminger Evan, a spokeswoman for the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, said Dorothy L. Simms was swimming laps with her husband, Gerald Simms, about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when Gerald Simms developed a leg cramp. He went inside to tend to the cramp and told his wife, who has Alzheimer's disease, to stay in the shallow end, Evan said. When he returned five or six minutes later, she was face down in the deep end of the pool. Simms, 78, called 911 and she was rushed to Citrus Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m., Evan said. The case is being ruled an accidental drowning, Evan said.

Mildred Deegan was not married. A photo caption Wednesday was incorrect on that point.
