Inmates evacuated after lightning strikes jail

About 150 inmates were evacuated from part of the Pinellas County Jail on Saturday afternoon after lightning hit an air conditioning unit and started a small fire, authorities said.

No one was hurt in the incident, which occurred about 1 p.m. in a minimum-security wing.

Inmates were temporarily kept in two jail recreation yards as firefighters extinguished the blaze and emptied smoke from the building.

The air-conditioning unit was damaged and should be repaired this week, officials said.
