Member's hard work earns top Rotarian award

(ran EO edition)

Oldsmar director of public works and utilities John Mulvihill has been chosen as the Oldsmar/East Lake Rotarian of the year for service to the club from July 2001 through June 2002.

"He works his fanny off for Rotary; he loves Rotary," said Earl Halle of Port Richey, last year's president and the sergeant at arms this year. "There's nothing fake about him."

Rotary Clubs start their years in July, and Mulvihill, 57, of Odessa served as the club's executive secretary and treasurer last year and as president the year before.

Mulvihill said the club has three major fundraising events each year: a golf tournament in October, the mayor's breakfast in November and the Armadillo Run in March or April.

"While everybody else was out raising money, I was back at the office paying the bills, keeping the finances straight and doing the administration," he said. "We try to put 100 percent of it back into supporting community projects."

The list of projects the group contributed to last year covers three pages.

"We gave $26,000 back to the community this past year," Mulvihill said.

At this week's Rotary luncheon at the Marriott Stratford Court of Palm Harbor, Halle collected $1 fines from those who were late, planned to leave early or had good news to share.

"I'm happy to say my daughter turned 14 and she starts at East Lake High School next week, and I'm not even nervous about it," Larry Liebling of East Lake said of his daughter Adriana Liebling.

As Rotary district governor Paul Slosberg of St. Petersburg inducted new member Kim Ellenor, Mulvihill sat off to the side, counting cash and paying the bills.

Slosberg asked members to sow seeds of love _ within the group, the community and the world. He asked members to contribute toward Rotary's goal of eliminating polio from the world by 2005.

ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR: John Mulvihill, the treasurer of the Oldsmar/East Lake Rotary Club and Oldsmar's director of public works and utilities, does some bookkeeping while a new member is inducted into the club Thursday in Palm Harbor. Mulvihill's work behind the scenes has recently earned him the club's Rotarian of the Year award.
