Chanda Rubin upset top-seeded Serena Williams 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in Friday's quarterfinals of the JPChase Morgan Open at Manhattan Beach, Calif., ending the French Open and Wimbledon champ's 21-match win streak.
No. 2 Jennifer Capriati exited within an hour of Williams, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Ai Sugiyama.
World No. 1 Williams had not lost since a three-set defeat to Justine Henin in the German Open final May 12. Rubin faces No. 4 Jelena Dokic today.
On Thursday night, Capriati struggled more than two hours before beating Tamarine Tanasugarn. Capriati, who had Lasik eye surgery two years ago, is wary of night matches because court lights affect her ability to see the ball.
