The commission vacancy created by the recent death of Clell Miller will be filled by appointment, according to the town's charter.

If the commission follows precedent, residents interested in succeeding Miller will be invited to apply. More than a year remains in the term of office.

The appointee would serve until the next scheduled election, in March 2003. Whoever wins that election would serve the remaining year of the original term. The commission seat would come up again for election to a full two-year term in May 2004.
