Nimble teens stop runaway school bus

A high school student safely stopped her school bus after the driver had a seizure with his foot stuck on the accelerator.

Driver Jose Grey, 32, of Bradenton, slumped over the wheel Friday and the bus carrying eight Gulf Coast Marine Institute students clipped a telephone pole and barreled into a ditch.

Several students, including Sharla Moore, 17, ran forward and pulled Grey out of his seat. That's when Moore took control of the bus in Palmetto, 31 miles south of Tampa.

"I just pulled off to the side and then slammed on the brakes," said Moore, who doesn't have a driver's license.

She stopped the bus in dense brush about 100 feet from where it left the road. No students were injured.

Grey was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released Friday.
