Variance for piano bar denied

Residents opposed to a piano bar and restaurant on the old town hall property won a partial victory Tuesday when the Town Commission voted down a parking variance previously approved by the Board of Adjustment.

The town has a $495,000 contract from developer Brent Cobb to buy the property, but the sale hinges on the still-pending review and approval of site and building plans.

Cobb wants to build a 2,500-square-foot restaurant/lounge with a piano bar and outside deck that would "cater to the older crowd."

The use is permitted under the property's commercial zoning, which also allows hotels and motels, guest lodging, general commercial businesses, and both single-family and duplex dwellings.

The property has 130 feet of frontage on Gulf Boulevard between 177th and 178th avenues.
