Ruby is a 2-year-old Australian cattle dog mix who was recently brought to the SPCA shelter. She is good with children. However, she is a dominant female best suited for a single-dog family. She is smart and a quick learner. Inquiries about adopting Ruby and other dogs and cats can be made at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Hernando County, 9075 Grant St., Brooksville. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. From now until Dec. 31, adoption fees for cats and dogs that are one year or older and have been in the shelter prior to Sept. 1 have been reduced to $45 for dogs and $30 for cats. The cost for all other dogs and puppies is $68; for kittens and cats, $58. Adoption fees include rabies shot, heartworm testing, deworming and spay/neuter. Fees for cats also include testing for feline leukemia and AIDS. Visit the Web site at petshelter.org or call 596-7000.
