Teen dies, another hurt at party

One teenager died and another was shot in the foot late Saturday during a party at an apartment complex near the University of South Florida.

Hillsborough sheriff's officials said Matthew Douglas Lewis, 18, of Lakeland, was pronounced dead at a hospital after attending a party at 2509 Rustic Ridge Loop at the Campus Lodge Apartments on Livingston Avenue.

Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Harold Winsett said officials are awaiting an autopsy to determine a cause of death.

The teenager shot in the foot was identified as Aaron Ray Doyne, 19, of Lutz. Officials said he was shot during an altercation. Winsett would not say where Doyne was taken for medical treatment, and his condition was not known Sunday.

Officials would not say Sunday whether Lewis or Doyne were USF students.

Deputies were called to a large party at the complex at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

Lewis was not breathing when paramedics loaded him into an ambulance, Winsett said. Doyne had been shot in the foot.

Winsett said deputies are talking to people who attended the party to determine what happened. No arrests had been made Sunday.

The large apartment complex is within a couple miles of the USF campus, and many residents are students.

Scott Schechinger, 23, lives above the first-floor apartment where the party took place.

He said he noticed the crowd when he arrived home about 10 p.m. Saturday. He went to bed and didn't know anyone had died or been shot until a reporter told him Sunday.

Schechinger said his downstairs neighbors are known to be a little rowdy, especially on the weekends. And that's normal, he said.

"There were just people hanging around," Schechinger said. "Wasn't anything worth noticing. You live in a college area, people have parties. Obviously, these people got out of hand."
