Motive for baseball bat killings a mystery

(ran SS edition of METRO & STATE)

A 17-year-old boy beat a cousin and a teenage girl to death with a baseball bat, apparently for no reason, police said Monday.

Jonathon Nodal was charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his 19-year-old cousin, Justin Morejon, and Karen Urbina, 16, said Miami-Dade County police spokeswoman Nelda Fonticiella.

The three were painting Morejon's house Sunday night when Nodal "saw the bat lying on the ground and he decided to pick it up," Fonticiella said. "There was no argument, nothing, according to what he's telling us."

Nodal first bludgeoned his cousin, and when Urbina attempted to stop him he fatally beat her, police said.

Police were called and arrested Nodal, who was being held Monday in a juvenile assessment center pending a court appearance, police said.

Detectives were continuing to investigate.
