After more than three years of briefing reporters about crime in the city, police spokesman Joe Durkin has been reassigned to a new unit that will handle natural and man-made disasters.
Durkin, 41, is now part of the Special Incident Management Unit, Tampa police spokeswoman Katie Hughes said Monday.
The unit will prepare the department, which has approximately 1,000 sworn officers, to handle disasters, including terrorism. Durkin will be the unit's citizen community liaison, coordinating efforts with civilian volunteers.
Durkin's position as a public information officer will not be filled, said Hughes, leaving her as the department's sole representative to the media.
