GIRLS GLANCE

CENTRAL

COACH: Hank Deslaurier.

LAST SEASON'S RECORD: 5-12-4.

KEY RETURNERS: Christy Bates, jr., CMF; Natasha Cabrera, G, jr; Christie Cullen, soph., F; Amber Hutchinson, jr., ORB; Valerie Long, sr., CMF; Tina Puricelli, soph., OMF; Ashley Sprowls, soph, stopper; Liz Wallace, jr. OMF.

KEY LOSS: Kelly Lubosco.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Danielle Brown, fr, F; Kim Brown, fr., MF; Melissa Carbaugh, fr, MB; Kathy Mince, sweeper, fr.; Jaleesa Scott, fr. F,; Nikki Weaver, fr., F.

OUTLOOK: Deslaurier is confident his third season will be the one in which the Bears finally make major progress. An influx of eight talented freshman _ five of whom may start _ buoys his opinion. Deslaurier is quick to assert that fleet-footed freshman forward Jaleesa Scott will lead the county in scoring. In case that doesn't quite work out, the Bears return their top scorer from last season, Cullen, who had 12.

HERNANDO

COACH: Kristi Mule.

LAST SEASON'S RECORD: 2-14.

KEY RETURNERS: Katie Pitts, jr., CMF; Karen Ferrigno, jr., GK; Kaliegh Chadwell, jr., D; Sherra Uribe, jr., F; Katie Werner, sr., sweeper; Leanne Christian, sr., stopper.

KEY LOSSES: Sheena Cobb, Erin Mountain, Carly Mountain.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Kara Bailey, jr., CMF; Danielle Coopman, fr., MF.

OUTLOOK: The Leopards are in total rebuilding mode under first-time coach Mule, a 23-year-old former Hernando player. Dedication, she said, will be a greater commodity than physical skill and winning will not determine the success of the season. Still, the Leopards are off to a good start. A year after winning two games, they opened 2002-2003 with an 8-0 win over West Port on Monday.

SCHEDULE: Nov. 18 _ West Port, 6; Nov. 20 _ at North Marion, 8; Nov. 22 _ at Lecanto, 7:30; Nov. 25 _ Citrus, 8; Nov. 26 _ at Springstead, 8; Dec. 4 _ at Crystal River, 7:30; Dec. 6 _ at Dunnellon, 6; Dec. 9 _ at Central, 8; Dec. 11 _ North Marion, 8; Dec. 13 _ Lecanto, 8; Dec. 16 _ at South Sumter, 5:30; Jan. 6 _ at Hudson, 7; Jan. 8 _ at Citrus, 7:30; Jan. 10 _ Crystal River, 8; Jan. 13 _ Central, 8; Jan. 15 _ Dunnellon, 6; Jan. 17 _ Hudson, 6; Jan. 21 _ South Sumter, 6; Jan. 22 _ at West Port, 6; Jan. 24 _ Pasco, 8; Jan. 29 _ Springstead, 8.

SPRINGSTEAD

COACH: Randy Strat.

LAST SEASON'S RECORD: 11-9 (district champion).

KEY RETURNERS: Lacy Chemeinti, jr., D; Brittney McElravy, soph., D; Brittany Exum, sr., sweeper; Sarah Bell, sr., MF; Elizabeth LaBella, soph., MF; Joi Mckenize, soph., F; Megan Allen, jr., F; Shannon Strat, jr., F.

KEY LOSSES: Stefanie Hibbert, Cyndee Cason.

KEY NEWCOMERS: Whitney Nissen, jr., GK; Ashley Johns, fr., MF.

OUTLOOK: Springstead was a surprise district champion last year after finishing 8-8 in the regular season. A defense that allowed just 1.3 goals per game helped the Eagles post three victories in the playoffs. Goalkeeper Stafanie Hibbert has graduated, and sweeper standout Cyndee Cason, a senior, tore an anterior cruciate ligament in club ball and is expected to miss the entire season because of surgery and rehabilitation. Whitney Nissen, a transfer from Central, will start in goal after having never played the position before, and major shuffling has been done on the back row. As opposed to last season, Strat said pressure will be put on forwards Shannon Strat, Joi McKenize and Megan Allen to win games. "Our one way to survive is to put balls in the net and give (Nissen) some breathing room," he said.

SCHEDULE: Nov. 18 _ Citrus, 8; Nov. 20 _ Central, 8; Nov. 22 _ at Leesburg, 8; Nov. 25 _ Ridgewood, 8; Nov. 26 _ Hernando, 8; Dec. 4 _ at Mitchell, 8; Dec. 6 _ East Ridge, 8; Dec. 9 _ at Lecanto, 7:30; Dec. 16 _ at Ridgewood, 8; Dec. 20 _ at Central, 8; Jan. 9 _ at Citrus, 7:30; Jan. 10 _ Leesburg, 8; Jan. 13 _ Crystal River, 8; Jan. 15 _ Mitchell, 8; Jan. 17 _ at East Ridge, 8; Jan. 22 _ Lecanto, 8; Jan. 27 _ at Crystal River, 5:30; Jan. 29 _ at Hernando, 8.
