OLYMPICS: The son of Olympic gymnastics star Olga Korbut was sentenced to almost 3{ years in federal custody for making $20,000 in counterfeit money. Richard Bortkevich, 23, pleaded guilty in September.

SOCCER: Michael Owen has been nominated for a second straight European Player of the Year award. Zinedine Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and Oliver Kahn also are candidates. Lothar Matthaeus, the 1991 world player of the year, severed his 18-year association with Bayern Munich after a spat with the team's general manager.

TENNIS: Sebastien Grosjean, Arnaud Clement, Nicolas Escude and Fabrice Santoro will play for France in the Davis Cup final Nov. 29-Dec. 1 against Russia in Paris. The Russian team of Marat Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Mikhail Youzhny and Andrei Stolyarov was announced last week.

WEIGHLIFTING: China's Wang Mingjuan set three world records in the women's 106-pound category at the world championships in Warsaw, Poland. Among the men, China's Wu Meijin won the gold in a close competition in the 123-pound category.

OBITS: Ben Plucknett, an American discus thrower who twice set the world record in 1981, died at 48. Mr. Plucknett's mark of 237 feet, 4 inches still is a U.S. record.
