HILLSBOROUGH OBITUARIES

BERGHOLD, EVELYN MARIE, 86, of Tampa, died Saturday (Nov. 16, 2002). Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she moved to Florida in 1972 from Allentown, Pa. Survivors include seven daughters, Shirley Berghold, Brenda Hines, Sharon Martinez, all of Tampa, Donna Kotz, Danielsville, Pa., Sandra Dalton, Unity, Maine, Darlene Winner, Allentown, Pa., and Merilee Choy, Morristown, N.J.; five sons, Barry, Clarence, N.Y., Gerald, Bath, Pa., Walter, Catasauqua, Pa., John and William; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. CROSS, ROBERT "BOB," 52, of Tampa, died Sunday (Nov. 17, 2002). Survivors include his wife, Faye; two daughters, Cheryl Cross, Tampa, and Sylvia Cross, Pinellas County; and three grandchildren, Austin and Summer Cross and Autumn Brackman. Adams & Jennings Funeral Home, Tampa.

DELL, CLARA W., 80, of St. Petersburg, formerly of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at Largo Medical Center. She was a St. Petersburg native and a 1939 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. She moved to Tampa in 1945 and returned to St. Petersburg in 1995. She attended St. Petersburg College. She was a 57-year member of First Presbyterian Church in Tampa and the Home Builders Sunday school class. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Ralph C.; a son, R. Clifton Dell, Tampa; a daughter, Susan Skipper, Tampa; a sister, Pauline W. Gandy, Brooksville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. John S. Rhodes, East Chapel, St. Petersburg.

EBY, CATHERINE MAE, 79, of Sarasota, formerly of Tampa, died Sunday (Nov. 17, 2002). Born in Tampa, she moved to Sarasota in 1976 from Michigan. She was a graduate of Plant High School and the University of Tampa, majoring in physical education. She was president of the Student Senate, a member of Delta Kappa sorority and was Minaret sports editor. She taught school in Tampa and in Michigan. She was a leader in both the Boy Scouts and the Camp Fire Girls and was a member of the Humane Society. Survivors include two sons, Jack and Jim; two daughters, Peg Eby-Jager and Kathleen Hill; a sister; a brother; and four grandchildren. Toale Bros. Gulf Gate Chapel, Sarasota.

EICHNER, LORRAINE, 67, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at Habana Healthcare. Survivors include her husband, Gerald; two sons; three daughters; a brother; and 15 grandchildren. Morning Glory Funeral Chapel, Tampa.

ELLISON, LT. COL. MARLON L. Ph. D., 85, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002). Born in Woodbine, Iowa, he taught marine biology at the University of Tampa and was an avid fisherman. HANDS, H.E. "TED," 75, of St. Petersburg, formerly of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at St. Anthony's Hospital. Born in Milwaukee, he came to St. Petersburg in 1978 from Tampa. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired as a president in the banking industry after 30 years of service. He also worked as an appraiser with Baynard Appraisal Co. He was past president of the Yale Club of Tampa Bay. He was an intercollegiate squash champion, played tennis competitively and was an avid golfer. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Susan; a daughter, Marilyn Twell, Vire-en-Champagne, France, two sons, Doug, Stillwater, Minn., and Ned, St. Petersburg; a brother, John, Evanston, Ill.; and four grandchildren. HIGDON, MISSOURI BELLE, 90, of Melbourne, formerly of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at Tandem Health Care, Melbourne. Born in Yulee, she moved to Tampa in 1946. Survivors include her son, Joe Frank, Melbourne; two grandchildren, Brad, Pompano Beach, and Susan Moore, Pembroke Pines; a great-granddaughter, Alexa Moore; and a niece, Jana Goodwin, Palatka. MARTIN, DOROTHY WILSON, 86, of Sun City Center, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002). She was a homemaker and a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, E. MURRAY, SEAN CHRISTOPHER, 61, of Lutz, died Tuesday (Nov. 19, 2002). Born in Stafford Springs, Conn., he moved to Lutz 17 years ago. Survivors include his wife, Helene; two daughters, Dina Hornack, Coventry, Conn., and Maureen Murray, Martha's Vineyard, Conn.; four brothers, Michael, Patrick, Timothy and Morris Murray; and a sister, Kathy Sequera. NEIL, SYLVIA P., 75, of Melbourne, formerly of Tampa, died Sunday (Nov. 17, 2002). Born in Omaha, Neb., she moved to Melbourne in 1978 from Tampa. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Jim, Tampa; a daughter, Norma Neil, Melbourne; two brothers, August Spinder, Omaha, and George Spinder, Burr Ridge, Ill.; three sisters, Dorothy Ricker and Mildred Curry, both of Melbourne, and Alice Hayhurst, Tampa; and one grandchild. OCHOA, JOAN HELEN, 63, of Valrico, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) at Brandon Regional Hospital. Born in Chicago, she moved to the Tampa area several years ago. She was a cook. Survivors include two sons, Randolph and Glen Melendez; four daughters, LeAnne Hayes, Sandra Burgos, Susan Kellog and Karen Santiago; a brother, Wally Paulson; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. RAMIREZ, OLGA MARINA, 80, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002). Born in Cali, Colombia, she moved to Tampa 25 years ago. Survivors include her husband, Edmundo; two children, Bertha and Louis; and three grandchildren, Lisa Marie, Carla Elizabeth and Philip Edmund. Glass Funeral Home, Tampa.

SCHAUT, M. MARLENE, 67, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002). She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include her husband, P. Gregory; a son, Wayne E. SCHMITT, ROBERT L., 63, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002) under the care of LifePath Hospice House in Sun City Center. Born in Mandan, N.D., he moved to Tampa in 1971 from Arizona. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, retiring from MacDill Air Force Base in 1978 after 20 years of service. He was a Hillsborough County corrections officer for 24 years, retiring in June. He had a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and was a member of the Shriners, BPO Elks, John Darling Masonic Temple, Fraternal Order of Police, Florida Sheriffs Association, Boys Ranch and was Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Rita; a son, Wayne Beyer, Bahama, N.C.; a daughter, AnnaMarie Hamond, Niceville; a brother, Doug, Minneapolis; and a grandson, Christopher Hammond, Niceville. SWEET, RUTH, 87, of Dayton, Tenn., formerly of Tampa, died Sunday (Nov. 17, 2002). Born in Bowling Green, Ky., she moved to Tampa in 1932, and to Dayton in 2001. She was a graduate of Bowling Green Business College in 1927. Survivors include three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Vanderwall Funeral Home, Dayton.

TOMPKINS, BERNICE L., 86, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002). Survivors include two daughters, Pat Sandifer and Nancy Quintanilla; a sister, Dot Beene; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Adams & Jennings Funeral Home, Tampa.

VARDE, MARINA, 88, of Tampa, died Monday (Nov. 18, 2002).
