Lions seniors go out with a bang in Saint Leo's volleyball finale

Senior outside hitter Cristiana Florea's kill punctuated the Saint Leo volleyball team's comeback in Saturday's season finale, a 24-30, 27-30, 30-20, 30-20, 15-10 victory over Eckerd.

Florea had 19 kills, 8 digs, 5 aces and a .385 hitting percentage in her final game. The Romanian averaged 4.14 kills, 2.86 digs and had a .338 hitting percentage this season. An international business major, she was named to the Academic All-District III third team and has a 3.67 grade-point average.

Senior blocker Lottie Phillip also concluded her career Saturday with 10 kills and a .444 hitting percentage. Alison Baker, a sophomore middle hitter from Hudson, had 10 kills and a .368 hitting percentage against Eckerd.

The Lions (16-18, 5-9) finished fifth in the Sunshine State Conference.

SOCCER HONORS: Saint Leo's Charlie Long (Gulf) and Helen Brady were named to the All-SSC teams.

Long, a senior goalkeeper, made the second team at-large. Long manned the Lions nets for all but one game, posting a 10-6-1 record with a 1.27 goals-against average and five shutouts. Brady is an honorable mention. The junior forward led the Lions in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points.

HOOPS OPENERS: The Saint Leo men's and women's basketball teams begin their seasons Friday.

The men travel to Jacksonville for a 7 p.m. tipoff, then play Saturday night at 7 at New Orleans. The Lions' first home game is Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Puerto Rico Cayvey. The women host Lake Superior State at 5 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Sleep Inn Classic.

The men lost 90-54 in an exhibition Saturday against Florida A&M. Senior guard Frank Craig (Pasco High, Pasco-Hernando Community College) led the Lions with 15 points.

The women defeated Jacksonville 62-56 on Friday in an exhibition. Junior forward September Harrison had a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Ebony Winn chipped in with 16 points and five rebounds.

Saint Leo's women's team also went 0-3 in the Division II Commissioners Association Tipoff Classic, Nov. 7-10 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
