An unidentified woman was killed trying to cross U.S. 19 north of State Road 52 late Tuesday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said. According to a report, the woman walked west across U.S. 19 at 11:29 p.m. and got to the northbound lane next to the median when she was struck by a car. Driver James Dono and passenger Suzanne Sump, both of Homosassa, were not injured. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A Times analysis of pedestrian deaths on U.S. 19 between 1990 and 2000 found that 88 percent were at night, 74 percent were in unlighted areas of the highway, and 76 percent were away from crosswalks.
