WHEN/WHERE: Saturday, Ed Radice Sports Complex, Tampa.
STARTING TIMES: Girls _ 10:10 a.m. Boys _ 10:45.
DIRECTIONS: From I-275, exit onto Bearss Avenue and go west. Bearss becomes Erlich Road. Continue west until it ends at Sickles High School. Turn right onto Gunn Highway. Go north to the first light and turn left onto S. Mobley. Go west about 1.8 miles. Ed Radice Park is on the left.
LOCAL TEAMS: Girls _ Crystal River, Lecanto. Boys _ Citrus.
2001 CHAMPS: Girls _ Miami Lourdes. Boys _ Miami Gulliver Prep.
OUTLOOK: Expect tight races in both divisions. On the boys side, watch for defending champion Gulliver Prep and always-tough Jacksonville Bishop Kenny, which might be the squad to beat. Bishop Kenny easily won the Region 1 crown, beating state-powers Tallahassee Chiles and St. Augustine Nease. Jesuit is another contender. The Tigers won it all in 2000 and were second last year. Jesuit's Andy Biladeau, Clearwater Central Catholic's Kevin Lyons and Bishop Kenny's Ryder Leary head a strong field. Citrus senior Tony Lyons, sixth last season, has a shot at a top-five finish. He was first in his district and second to Wesley Chapel's David Forry in the region meet. Citrus was seventh in 2001 and fourth in 1999 and 2000. The Hurricanes, when on, have top-five potential. Lyons usually does his part, but for Citrus to make a title push, others will have to post personal-bests. Girls favorite Cocoa Beach senior Elynore Kabboord, the 2001 champion, won last week's Region 2 meet by more than a minute. In the team competition, Bishop Kenny, Lourdes, Jacksonville Bolles, Pensacola Catholic and Cocoa Beach appear to have the best squads. Lecanto and Crystal River, ranked 12th and 14th, are capable of posting top-10 performances if their 3-4-5 runners produce. Lecanto was ninth last year.
