Bears offer Stewart a contract

The Bears made a contract offer to Kordell Stewart, the free agent's second offer after being released by Pittsburgh, according to media reports and the quarterback's agent.

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday that the Bears made a proposal to Stewart's California-based agent, Leigh Steinberg, on Friday night. Steinberg said Stewart also received an offer from Arizona. Cardinals vice president Rod Graves said he is dealing with Steinberg.

Bears spokesman Scott Hagel said he couldn't confirm the offer. Steinberg did not return calls from the Associated Press.

Stewart, the former Steelers' starter who lost his job last season to Tommy Maddox, was one of three quarterbacks to visit the Bears last week. The others were Jake Plummer and Jeff Blake. Plummer signed with Denver.

Chicago has a vacancy after releasing Jim Miller.

Dolphins sign receiver

DAVIE _ Wide receiver Derrius Thompson signed a three-year contract with the Dolphins, increasing the possibility Oronde Gadsden will not be re-signed.

Thompson spent his first four seasons in Washington, where he caught 53 passes for 773 yards and four touchdowns last season. He came on strong in the final five games with 28 receptions for 437 yards and three touchdowns.

Thompson will compete with James McKnight for a starting job opposite Chris Chambers.

Thompson has a head start after two years with coordinator Norv Turner in Washington.

Gadsden can re-sign, but Rick Spielman, director of player personnel, said the sides are not close.

BENGALS: Defensive tackle John Thornton signed a six-year contract. Cincinnati's Post and Enquirer reported the deal is worth $22.5-million. Thornton spent four seasons with the Titans.

JETS: Guard Tom Nutten agreed to a four-year contract and will replace Randy Thomas, who went to the Redskins. Terms weren't available.

VIKINGS: Restricted free-agent kicker Paul Edinger signed an offer sheet for five years and $7-million, agent Ken Harris said. The Bears have a week to match the offer. Edinger made 22 of 28 field-goal attempts last season, with the longest 53 yards.
