American Legion Auxiliary plans help for needy vets

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 186 will present "Stand Down 2003" on April 26 at VFW Post 10209, 15166 Spring Hill Drive.

A stand down refers to a grass roots, community-based intervention program designed to help homeless and disadvantaged veterans. Its purpose is to give a "hand up, not a handout."

This will be the first stand down in Hernando County. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will provide area homeless and disadvantage veterans with a broad range of necessities, including food, clothing, medical, legal and mental health assistance, job counseling, referrals, and companionship and camaraderie.

Some of the organizations involved are American Legion Post 186, VFW Post 10209, VFW Post 9236, DAV Post 67 and Marine Corps League 708.

Also, free transportation will be given to veterans on the Bus. Organizations wishing to participate or donate services, call Gail Cleaves, 799-4464, Beth Geiger, (727) 861-1026; or Earlene Young, 796-0381.
