Controversial call favors Miami

The Big East tournament has a timeout controversy.

No. 18 Rutgers was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Miami on Sunday night after being hit with a technical foul for excessive timeouts in a 77-74 loss. But the player who called the timeout, Cappie Pondexter, has laryngitis and can barely speak above a whisper.

Tamara James hit two go-ahead free throws with eight seconds left that resulted from the technical. The Hurricanes (18-11) insist Pondexter called a timeout after diving for a loose ball.

"(Official Angie Lewis) said I called timeout," said Pondexter, whose 30 points were a school record for a tournament. "I didn't. My arms were around the ball."

Yalonda McCormick added a free throw with 5.4 seconds left, and Pondexter missed a 3 at the buzzer.

NO. 2 DUKE 76, GA. TECH 52: Sheana Mosch scored 16 to move No. 2 Duke (30-1) closer to its fourth consecutive tournament title at Greensboro, and the senior guard became the winningest player in league history with 119 victories.
