The North Florida Great Pyrenees Club had its annual picnic in Pinellas Park on Saturday. The breed name comes from the mountain range in southwestern Europe, where the dogs have long been used to guard flocks. Hence they are smart, independent and driven to protect.
A Great Pyrenees takes off across a Pinellas Park lake to cool off. Taking on a Pyr is a big decision, as they can weigh from 85 to 140 pounds. A few stray, abused and unwanted dogs need homes. To adopt one, call Terry Stephanick at 517-2801.
