Big white dog convention

(ran East edition)

The annual picnic of the North Florida Great Pyrenees Club drew large dogs and their admirers in Pinellas Park on Saturday. At left, a dog rests near a cold tub. The name comes from the mountain range in southwestern Europe, where the breed has long been used to guard flocks. The club is seeking homes for a few stray, abused and unwanted dogs. To adopt one, call Teri Stephanick at (727) 517-2801.

A Great Pyrenees takes off across a Pinellas Park lake to cool off. The dogs can weigh from 85 to 140 pounds. They are smart, placid and independent, with an instinct to guard and protect. The coarse coat actually protects Pyrs from the sun.
