The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference has announced its award winners for the winter sports season.
Citrus County edged Hernando County 60-53 for the most GCAC selections, and took player of the year honors in four of six sports. Citrus County also had four coach of the year recipients.
Citrus had the most selections of any school, with 24 Hurricanes being named all-conference. Lecanto had 20 and Crystal River 16 earning accolades.
Hernando got 19 picks, while Springstead and Central each had 17.
Citrus, which finished fourth at state in girls weightlifting, snagged 11 of 20 all-conference selections. The 'Canes (5-0 GCAC) featured co-lifters of the year Whitney Gelin and Brittany Vitter and Doug Patton as coach of the year.
The Citrus boys basketball team went 10-0 in league competition and made it to the regional semifinals behind player of the year Jamaal Galloway. Hurricanes coach Jimmy Thomas also took top honors.
In girls basketball, Citrus' Katie Steelfox received player of the year recognition for the 9-1 conference champs. Bruce Nelson was coach of the year.
The Lecanto girls soccer squad posted an 8-1-1 mark to lead all GCAC competition. Amber Gidden was the player of the year, and Kevin Towne was coach of the year.
Runner-up Crystal River netted six all-conference picks in wrestling, led by Class A state runner-up Brady Pratt. GCAC champ Hernando, the state runner-up in Class A, had 11 selections.
Lecanto, which finished second in boys soccer, had five players named to the conference team, with no senior selections. Region semifinalist Springstead went 9-1 in GCAC play to take the title.
