Commissioners pick sides in Tampa mayoral race

Hillsborough County Commissioner Tom Scott, an African-American pastor who represents central Tampa, threw his support Wednesday to former elections supervisor Pam Iorio's bid for mayor.

Scott, pastor of the 34th Street Church of God, said Iorio believes in diversity and wants to unify east and west Tampa.

County Commissioner Pat Frank, who spoke at a news conference Wednesday against Iorio, has been actively campaigning for business consultant Frank Sanchez.

Frank has done radio commercials touting Sanchez's campaign.

Sanchez, a former Clinton White House aide who opened a consulting firm in 1991, is trailing Iorio in the polls with less than two weeks left before the mayoral runoff, which is on March 25.

Iorio spent eight years as a Hillsborough County commissioner and a decade as elections supervisor.
