Jammin' with the orchestra

Some top-level jazz musicians are appearing with the Florida Orchestra this weekend. Heading the bill is vocalist Karrin Allyson, above, whose 2001 Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane was nominated for a pair of Grammys. Her followup album, In Blue, covered songs by Joni Mitchell, Blossom Dearie, Bonnie Raitt and others. Allyson will be joined by Tampa jazz man Fred Johnson in tributes to Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald and George and Ira Gershwin on a pops program conducted by Matt Catingub, who leads the band Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack.

Performances are 8 p.m. Friday at Ferguson Hall of Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall and 7:30 p.m. Monday at Mahaffey Theater. Tickets: $20-$42. (813) 286-2403 or toll-free 1-800-662-7286 or www.floridaorchestra.org.
