Pinellas Park school reports student assault

Pinellas Park Elementary School officials sent home a letter to parents Wednesday indicating that one student had assaulted another, but not revealing the nature of the assault.

"Yesterday, we were made aware of a physical incident of one child on another. This incident was serious and necessitated the involvement of law enforcement," principal Vivian Neumann said in the letter.

Neumann said she could give no details because of the nature of the incident and the ages of the children involved.

Ron Stone, spokesman for the Pinellas County School District, said information about the case was not public record because it was part of an ongoing police investigation and part of one student's disciplinary file.

"It was handled appropriately," Stone said. "It was brought to the school's attention by another student."

Stone said the school's letter to parents was carefully worded to include only the amount of information that the school district can release at this point.

The Pinellas Park Police Department is not investigating the case. "We have no knowledge of it," said Pinellas Park Sgt. Dan Levy.

Instead, the case is being investigated by the Pinellas School District's campus police.
