TOURNAMENTS

SETON HALL 67, MIAMI 52: Kelly Whitney had 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and the Pirates shot 62 percent in the first half to beat the Hurricanes in the opening round of the Big East tournament.

The Pirates (17-11), who many people felt needed one win in this tournament to ensure an at-large berth in the NCAA field of 65, play Connecticut (19-8) in the quarterfinals tonight.

Andre Sweet had 16 points for Seton Hall, which snapped a two-game losing streak that followed a nine-game winning streak.

Paulo Coelho scored 12 for the Hurricanes (11-17), who lost seven of eight to finish the season.

MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: Thurman Zimmerman scored 16 of his 29 in the second half and South Carolina State beat weary Bethune-Cookman 75-73 in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Bulldogs (18-10) hit six consecutive free throws to pull away after Bethune-Cookman used a 20-9 run to pull even at 64 with 3:29 remaining. Maurice Riddick had 26 points and Richard Toussaint added 18 for the Wildcats, who took the court about 21 hours after beating Morgan State 104-103 in a double-overtime play-in game. South Carolina State will play Howard (13-16), which upset second-seeded Delaware State 68-65, in the semifinals on Friday.
