A pedestrian struck by a car as she tried to cross U.S. 19 was in fair condition at a St. Petersburg hospital Wednesday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Officers said Palm Harbor resident Leslie Anne Newton, 33, was driving south on U.S. 19 when she struck a woman in her early 40s as she tried to walk across the highway five blocks north of Alderman Road near the entrance to the Westin Innisbrook Resort. The woman was conscious and alert after she was hit but was transported by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday, FHP community service officer Willard Fleetwood said. Fleetwood could not confirm details of the pedestrian's identity and said no one was likely to be charged. Alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the accident, but the investigation was continuing, he said.
