Alafia students place third in math competition

Alafia Elementary School students placed third in the county Math Bowl competition on Feb. 20. Second-graders Ellie Mancini, Kaylen Mandry, Mitchell McDade, Nicholas Monteiro and Ashley Tressel advanced to the final round after winning third place among 30 eastern Hillsborough County schools in January, said math teacher Jane Ham.

"We're very excited!" Ham said. "And surprised. But we worked for it." The Math Bowl winners will be presented at the May School Board meeting, said Lia Crawford, the district's math supervisor for elementary education. Westchase Elementary took first place and Tampa Palms finished second in the competition.
