Israeli soldiers attacked the hideouts of Palestinian fighters in two West Bank communities late Thursday and early Friday, killing at least 10 people in separate gun battles, the Israeli military reported.
In both clashes _ in the northern city of Jenin and in a small town outside Nablus in the central West Bank _ Israeli soldiers went to specific locations to arrest wanted Palestinians and gunfights broke out, leading to the Palestinians' deaths, according to an Israeli military spokeswoman. She said no Israeli soldiers were killed or injured.
"I don't think it's a credible story," Saeb Erekat, the Palestinian Authority's local government minister, said of the Israeli version of events. "What's happening here is that we have an Israeli army that's trigger happy. They're out there with permission to shoot and then to lie."
