An elegant chest for treasures

Published March 15, 2003|Updated Aug. 31, 2005

Featuring real porcelain knobs, felt-lined drawers and solid brass hardware, this elegant jewelry and lingerie chest is made of mahogany for its beauty and strength. As practical as it is beautiful, the chest is designed to allow chains and necklaces to hang loosely (to avoid tangling) and keeps jewelry clean and protected in the top compartment and small upper drawers. Below, the larger drawers are ideal for storing delicate lingerie and hosiery.

A good project for woodworkers of most skill levels, the plan calls for straight cuts on all but three cuts. The three curved cuts for the base are traced from patterns, so there's no guesswork. Assembly is mostly a matter of nailing and gluing the pieces together.

Materials include 16 to 18 board feet of mahogany, a 4-by-8 sheet of mahogany plywood and a sheet of hardboard, along with hinges, knobs, felt, jewelry hooks, nails and glue. Also, a mirror can be attached to the underside of the top panel.

The completed project measures 39 inches tall by 19 inches wide by 12 inches deep, and the side doors and top panel close flush, giving the unit a neat appearance.

The Jewelry & Lingerie Chest plan, No. 830, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step directions with 20 photos, full-size patterns, diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule.

A package of jewelry and lingerie furniture, No. C144, is $24.95 and includes this plan, plus plans for a lingerie chest and a jewelry box. A full catalog is $2. Please allow about four weeks for delivery (for rush delivery, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum and allow about two weeks).
