Tampa discount lure attracts hundreds

So many people made e-mail requests for the Tampa Downtown Partnership's discount card that the organization had to stop taking applications online.

After a report on the free card ran in the St. Petersburg Times on Tuesday, the group got more than 300 requests, said president Christine Burdick. That was too many for the staff to handle, she said, so the application was pulled off the group's Web site.

The site, www.tampasdowntown.com, lists more than a dozen hotels and other locations where people can go to pick up the card. (Click on the image of the card at the left of the Web page.) Forty-five downtown businesses are offering discounts and other deals to cardholders through the end of August. The card was developed to lure downtown workers out of their air-conditioned offices to patronize shops and cafes.
