Nonprofit group defends rights of disabled

Barrier Free America continues to try to create a model "barrier-free community" for the more than 14,000 people with disabilities in the county.

Members of Barrier Free America have been working with health care providers, county entities and small businesses to increase awareness and provide information about their responsibilities under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Their assessment and recommendations to small businesses have opened the doors to many residents who had limited access to services. It has also helped the business owners by increasing their clientele.

Barrier Free America, a nonprofit agency, is operated by a volunteer staff and board of directors through fundraisers and donations. The agency welcomes contributions.

For questions about the requirements of the ADA, Barrier Free America services or current projects, call 628-5401. The office is at 3269 S Suncoast Blvd., Golden Eagle Plaza.
