Shutout keeps Cross Bayou alive in District 5

It was survival night at the District 5 Major Baseball All-Star tournament Thursday.

Cross Bayou avoided elimination by defeating Southwest 10-0. Winston Rivas scattered four hits while striking out six. Justin Helms hit a three-run homer in the third.

Taz Smith hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and had eight RBIs to help Pinellas Park National stay alive with an 11-4 win over Azalea. Cody Mattull was the winning pitcher.

MAJOR BASEBALL: Tarpon Springs defeated Largo American 8-1 Wednesday night in District 12. Anthony Diaz had three hits and Nic Duvlino picked up the win. Ryan Lange pitched six three-hit innings for Oldsmar in a 4-0 win over Dunedin National. D.J. Dougherty drove in two.

JUNIOR BASEBALL: Southwest began the District 5 All-Star season with a bang Thursday. Home runs by Wes Anderson, Brandon Bonner, Ben Stewart and Zack Wides and a pair by Kyle Hobelmann aided Southwest in a 15-8 win over Seminole.

MINOR BASEBALL: Alex Knapp struck out six and allowed two runs in Oldsmar's win over Palm Harbor National to claim the District 12 championship Wednesday. Adam Abelson went 2-for-2 with two runs.

MAJOR SOFTBALL: Xanthia Reeves helped ignite a four-run rally in the third as Baypoint eliminated reigning District 5 Tournament of Champions winner Meadowlawn 5-2. Lizzy Brunello held Meadowlawn to seven hits and two walks for the win. Evan Ligon, Carly Ferrara and Renee Smallwood had key hits.

Britney Wolfendarger scattered four hits in Azalea's 11-4 win over Gulfport/Northwest. Michelle Molina and Bonnie Joyner helped out defensively and Nicole Zell had three hits.

JUNIOR SOFTBALL: In District 5 on Wednesday, Diana Cabili pitched seven innings in Cross Bayou's 13-7 win over Northeast/Gulfport.
