Carl and Cornelia Gardner of Hudson celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently at a family dinner party at Sam Seltzer's Steakhouse in Port Richey.
They met in 1937 in Monroe, N.C., while he was serving in the U.S. Navy construction battalion, known as the Seabees.
He recalled looking across an open cotton field between the Seabee encampment and the home where she lived with her family. He saw her outside in the yard and even then, he knew she was the "girl of his dreams." They married Feb. 21, 1938, in Monroe.
They moved to the Atlanta area where he was employed 40 years as service manager for Harry Sommers Chrysler. They lived in Atlanta another 10 years before moving to Hudson in July 2002.
Their children are a son Sidney and his wife Susan of Hudson; a son Jerry and his wife DeeDee of Miami Lakes; a daughter Patricia Hill and her husband Marty of Kennesaw, Ga. Their grandchildren are Brandi Wells of Morrow, Ga., Krista Farinas of New Port Richey; Lisa Gardner of Hudson and Summer Buxton of Clearwater. They have five great-grandsons.
They are Methodists. He enjoys gardening. She is a homemaker and her hobby is doing crossword puzzles.
