Keep kids safe in the bathroom

Published Sep. 1, 2005

Here are some ideas for child safety in the bathroom from interior designer Barbara Schmidt and American Standard, the plumbing manufacturer:

+ Place a step stool near the bathtub so tots can climb in and out easily.

+ Designate a lower drawer or cabinet for towels, toys and other bath-time items.

+ Transfer shampoo into small plastic bottles so children can learn how to pour their own.

+ Water heaters should not exceed 120 degrees. Install a faucet with safety stops that offer adjustable settings and restrict how far the handle can be pushed toward hot.

+ Safeguard the bathroom with inexpensive locks and safety devices, such as locks for toilet seat lids and cabinets, outlet and doorknob covers, and windup devices for blind cords.

+ If you're renovating, choose slip-proof flooring such as vinyl or textured tile, and consider a lower sink and a child-height toilet, which can be replaced with a full-sized toilet as the kids grow.
