Man accused of punching motorist at Wal-Mart

(ran PC edition)

A Zephyrhills man is accused of punching a fellow motorist who was waiting for a parking space at a Wal-Mart Supercenter on U.S. 301.

Jack Olin Atkinson, 72, of 4317 Plum St., was charged with simple battery and burglary after the dispute about 3 p.m. Thursday.

Atkinson was accused of reaching inside the victim's car and punching him in the left shoulder, according to the Zephyrhills Police Department.

When investigators met with Atkinson on Monday at the Zephyrhills police station, he told them that he had grown impatient at the other driver, who was waiting for a parking space, so he honked his horn.

When the other motorist responded with an obscene gesture, Atkinson said he got out of his car and approached him. But Atkinson denied reaching into his car, though witnesses said he did.

Atkinson was released from the Land O'Lakes jail after posting $10,500 bail.
