Northeast got revenge against Seminole and advanced to the District 5 Major baseball championship game with a 4-3 win Tuesday. Alex Winkle struck out eight and held Seminole to three hits.
It was the first meeting between the teams since Seminole edged Northeast in the Tournament of Champions title game.
Alex Travis tied it at 2 with a two-run homer in the third. David Edwards scored the winning run on Jordan Arnold's sacrifice bunt in the sixth.
Seminole plays Cross Bayou in the loser's bracket final tonight, and the winner plays Seminole on Thursday. Cross Bayou ended Meadowlawn's season with a 3-0 win. J.C. Fortunato drove in the winning run with a single in the first. Curtis Riley held Meadowlawn to one hit and struck out six.
Palm Harbor earned a spot in the quarterfinals in District 12 with a 3-1 win against Largo. Vinny Storms' single brought home Michael Warren with the winning run. East Lake also clinched a quarterfinal berth after shutting out West Pinellas 6-0. Nick Franz struck out nine and hit two doubles. Martin Franco scored twice for East Lake.
JUNIOR BASEBALL: In District 12, Steve Bennett, Brad Wooten and Eric Dawson led Tarpon Springs' offense in a 16-8 win over Dunedin American. Brent Hill, Mike Ganci, Drew Stimmel and Matt Seidel combined on a three-hitter in East Lake's 14-4 win over Hudson. Ganci, Stimmel and Dave Campbell each had two hits. Michael Papa and Derek Saari each had doubles in Oldsmar's 7-2 win over West Pasco. Chrisdion Weaver had a triple and Matt Gracie struck out five.
In District 5, Emanuel Latorre allowed three hits and struck out six in Northeast/Meadowlawn's 6-1 win over Northwest. Nick Schlereth hit a two-run single in the first for Northeast/Meadowlawn. Wes Anderson's home run helped Southwest defeat Pinellas Park National. Marc Reed hit a grand slam for Pinellas Park National.
On Monday, Brett Rousseau hit two home runs in Pinellas Park National's 9-7 win over Cross Bayou. Justin Heimes' inside-the-park homer helped Clearwater defeat Largo 16-9.
MAJOR SOFTBALL: Seminole advanced to the District 5 championship game by defeating Baypoint 11-4. Kristie Belvedere led a 15-hit attack with two extra-base hits. Kelsey Knight allowed two hits and struck out 11. Seminole plays Cross Bayou tonight at 6.
On Monday, Ally Staggs and Kaleigh Hall combined on a no-hitter as West Pasco defeated Tarpon Springs 13-3.
SENIOR BASEBALL: Steve Lynch hit a home run and Bobby Hartman pitched four shutout innings in Palm Harbor National's 15-0 win over Hudson.
MINOR SOFTBALL: Karrie Davis struck out 10 in West Pasco's 10-0 win over Safety Harbor.
