NOTEBOOK

YANKEES: New York was without its starting middle infield as shortstop Derek Jeter and second baseman Alfonso Soriano sat with hand injuries. Both were hit by pitches from Boston's Pedro Martinez on Monday. Centerfielder Bernie Williams walked three times and hit a sacrifice fly in what probably was his final game of a rehabilitation stint with Double-A Trenton. First baseman/DH Nick Johnson, sidelined by a stress fracture in his right hand, hopes to rejoin the team by the end of the month. He fielded grounders for the second straight day and hit off a tee. Right-handed reliever Antonio Osuna, on the disabled list with a right groin strain, struck out two and allowed one hit in one inning in a Gulf Coast League game. It was his first outing since going on the DL June 19.
