Polish auxiliary chooses new officers

The Polish Legion of American Veterans Ladies Auxiliary Chapter 184 has announced new officers for the coming year.

Penny Pilipuf will serve as president. Other officers will be vice president Leonora Greene, recording secretary Pat Sorchy, financial secretary Mary Barto, treasurer Jean Rozmus, sergeant at arms Stella Kubicki and trustees Regina Lucek, Stella Poznanski and trustees Dorothy Giampetro.

Appointed officers will be chaplain Catherine Kamzelski, VAVS representative Irene Kazanecki, VAVS deputy Lillian Rybowiak, VAVS deputy Laverne Wozniak, arts and crafts Dorothy Giampetro, sunshine lady Mitzi Scott and parliamentarian Kay Kisiorowski.

Ex-River Ridge student

graduates from Navy

James M. Battista, son of Debra and Michael Battista of Port Richey, graduated and was commissioned May 23 as an ensign in the U.S. Navy at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Battista has selected service in special warfare and will begin training in Coronado, Calif.

At the academy, he received the USNA Foundation H. McCoy Jones Award for demonstrating the highest degree of excellence in the Naval Academy athletic program and in leadership and competitive spirit.

He also received the Robert E. Cowell Memorial Swimming Trophy awarded to a graduating midshipman for outstanding swimming ability, leadership and good sportsmanship. In addition, his name is engraved on the memorial plaque in Lejeune Hall, the swimming complex.

Battista also received the senior award for participating in a varsity sport for four years and receiving a varsity letter each year. He was captain of the men's swimming team this year.

Battista graduated in 1998 from River Ridge High School, where he was the first state champ and All-American in men's swimming in Pasco County.
