Fertilizer waste dumping delayed by work on barge

State plans to dump waste from a fertilizer factory in the Gulf of Mexico have been delayed until at least next week, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

A DEP spokeswoman said Wednesday that the barge to be used, the New York, is still being cleaned at the Port of Tampa. Until all residue of its usual cargo of gasoline is cleaned out, the barge will not be moved to Port Manatee and loaded with the waste from the Piney Point plant.

DEP officials had hoped to begin barging the treated waste to the gulf this week.
