SAUSAGE ASSAULT: Pirates first baseman Randall Simon was questioned by sheriff's officers after hitting one of the Brewers' racing sausages with a bat.

Four people in sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh innings at Brewers games as part of entertainment for the fans.

Film showed that when the group passed the Pirates dugout, Simon swung at the Italian sausage character, played by a 20-year-old South Milwaukee woman, causing her to fall. As she fell, a nearby sausage also went down.

RICKEY AN MVP: Rickey Henderson ran off with another award when he was named MVP of the independent Atlantic League All-Star Game.

Henderson hit a run-scoring double, going 1-for-2 with a walk in leading the South Division over the North 2-1. The 10-time All-Star outfielder still hopes to make it back to the majors at 44.

ANGELS: General manager Bill Stoneman got a four-year contract extension, a reward for building Anaheim's first World Series championship team.

DODGERS: Leftfielder Brian Jordan, as expected, will have season-ending surgery on his left knee Friday.

GIANTS: Left-hander Kirk Rueter went on the 15-day disabled list with a strained pitching shoulder.

PIRATES: First-round pick Paul Maholm, a left-hander from Mississippi State, agreed to a $2.2-million signing bonus and will report to Pittsburgh's rookie league team in Bradenton.

RANGERS: Outfielder Kevin Mench was put on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left wrist and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Outfielder Laynce Nix, an All-Star Futures game selection and one of Texas' top prospects, was recalled from Double-A Frisco.
