A former Gainesville police officer was acquitted Friday in the shooting death of a University of Florida student.
A six-person jury cleared Jimmy Hecksel of manslaughter in the death of Corey Rice after a weeklong trial.
Rice, 30, was shot and killed by Hecksel on Jan. 30, 2001. Hecksel pulled Rice over for speeding and erratic driving, but Rice allegedly tried to drive away.
Hecksel fired seven shots, hitting Rice three times. Hecksel told investigators he believed Rice was trying to run him over.
A Gainesville Police Department internal investigation concluded that Hecksel's final two shots, fired at the car as it pulled away, were not justified.
Hecksel was fired after the investigation. An ex-Marine, Hecksel now lives in Michigan with his family and works in theconstruction industry.
