Holy beginnings

Muslims at the Islamic Society of Pinellas County mark the start of Ramadan by performing Taraweeh (special night prayers), which are repeated nightly during the holy month of Ramadan. They gathered Sunday night in the society mosque at 9400 67th St. N in Pinellas Park. The faithful are to abstain from food, drink and sensual pleasures between sunrise and sunset each day of Ramadan. It's a routine that teaches self-restraint and generosity, while obeying God's commandments, said Ahmed Bedier, communication director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations Florida.
