Jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson has performed for audiences around the globe. On Monday, the Canadian-born musician and his band, Big Bop Nouveau, will bring their big band tunes to the Wesley Chapel High School Center for the Arts.
The 927-seat theater boasts state-of-the-art lighting and sound.
"It has all the amenities of most professional theaters," director Patrick McDermott said.
The show features Ferguson, a 75-year-old, multi-talented musician, plus a host of instrumentalists on saxophones, pianos and drums. Together the group produces a variety of tunes from bebop and funk to swing. "He's noted for his high note abilities," McDermott said. "He's a good jazz improvisor. This guy is a legend in the jazz world."
Ferguson has received three Grammy nominations during his long career and is well-known for Gonna Fly Now, the theme song from the 1976 film Rocky.
This performance is an honor, McDermott said. "He has 120 dates on his tour and for us to have one of those dates is great," he said.
