Woman charged with child neglect, truancy
A Zephyrhills woman was charged with child neglect and habitual truancy after police said she kept her son from school in a home rife with filth.
Shelly Rae Burch, 39, of Seventh Street remained in the Land O'Lakes jail Friday in lieu of $16,263 bail.
Zephyrhills police arrested her Thursday after finding her 12-year-old son at home instead of at school in violation of a court order, a department report said. The boy has not been to school since Sept. 23.
Also, officers found dirty clothes on every floor of the home; a kitchen table cluttered with dirty dishes and old food, beer bottles and trash; an overflowing garbage can; garbage on the kitchen counter; pet feces on the dining room floor and a strong smell of urine throughout the home, the report said.
The bathroom toilet was not working and held human feces, it added.
