Couple robbed while sitting in cab, police say

A Carrollwood couple were robbed about 2 a.m. Saturday as they rode in a cab that was taking them home from Ybor City.

Police say four to five men opened the cab's doors while it was stopped at the intersection of E 26th Avenue and N 48th Street. The suspects took money and a purse from the 35-year-old man and the 29-year-old woman.

Brandon man robbed by two gunmen

TAMPA _ Two armed men robbed a 23-year-old Brandon resident at a Tampa apartment complex about 5 a.m. Saturday, taking his cash, cell phone and keys before they fled on foot.

Police said two men described as Hispanic and between 18 and 20 years old walked up to Treadic Pugh at 5238 Matador Court, pointed guns and demanded money. Pugh was not injured.

One suspect is described as 6 feet and 160 pounds, wearing a black shirt and pants. The other suspect is 5 feet 7 and 180 pounds, also wearing a black shirt and pants. The men were carrying short-barreled weapons, either rifles or shotguns.

Police seek three men who invaded two homes

TAMPA _ Police are looking for three men who brandished handguns and invaded two neighboring residences in the Sulphur Springs area early Saturday, only to drop most of the stolen money and property as they fled.

Police said the suspects knocked on the door of 8207 N 12th St. just before 1 a.m. When one of the residents answered, the three men pushed their way inside. Two were armed.

They took money and unidentified property from the two victims, then went next door, where the front door was open. They again demanded money and property. But as the men ran away, they dropped their stolen loot along the way, police said.

The suspects all are described as black men. One wore a hood over his face. He is believed to be in his 20s, 5 feet 10 and about 250 pounds. The second suspect is also in his 20s and 6 feet 3 with a slim build. He wore a black knit stocking over his face. The third suspect is of medium build and wore dark clothing with a hood.

Tampa motorcyclist killed in accident

TAMPA _ A Tampa man died Friday in a motorcycle accident on 50th Street, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

Jeremy T. Vaughn, 24, of 4016 W Cass St., died about 4 p.m. when a semitrailer truck headed in the same direction as Vaughn turned right in front of him, FHP Lt. Bruce Doras said. Vaughn crashed into the truck's side, Doras said.

As of Saturday, no charges had been filed against the truck driver, Frank Collura, 79, of Dade City.

Coronet plant subject of civil rights complaints

PLANT CITY _ The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights will investigate allegations that agencies failed to act when black residents complained about pollution from phosphate processor Coronet Industries, officials said.

The preliminary inquiry was requested by the Florida chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference after Lincoln Park residents complained that something in their well water was sickening them.
