The Daughters of the American Revolution, Winding Waters Chapter, is sponsoring an American History Essay Contest for students in the fifth through eighth grades. This year's theme is "The Louisiana Purchase _ Thomas Jefferson's Presidential Legacy."
Essays must be 300 to 1,000 words. Participants are to write a chapter of Jefferson's "autobiography," focusing on the importance of the Louisiana Purchase in Jefferson's presidential career and to the country.
The DAR chapter will select one essay from each grade level as chapter winners, which will then be forwarded to state competitions. State winners then move on to divisional then national competitions. One essay for each grade will be selected as national winners. Winners will be presented with a certificate, gold pin and monetary award at Continental Congress in July 2004.
Contest rules/applications are available in the guidance offices at area schools. All essays must be submitted by Nov. 21. For information, call Phyllis Scales at 596-9341.
