"I've seen bar fights with more arrests than that."

_ Hillsborough sheriff's Lt. Rod Reder, on the relatively low number of arrests at this year's Guavaween celebration in Ybor City.

"It's critical that we know the numbers. They are part of our community, like it or not. At some point we're measured by man's humanity to man."

_ Hillsborough Commissioner Jan Platt on a census of Hillsborough's homeless.

"We played down the amount of people to be expected in order to insure our variance requests. Chalk that one up to poor judgment on my part."

_ John Langley, organizer of the Gala Corina art event, in an e-mail to artists about efforts to persuade the city to let them use the old Arlington Hotel on Franklin Street as a temporary gallery for the annual arts event.

"We try to foster economic development, but I could not sleep at night. ... This is life and safety. This isn't a game."

_ Fire Marshal Gary Gonzalez, who said the old Arlington Hotel building could not hold the large crowd of thousands expected for the annual Gala Corina art event.
