The top two teams and top two individuals not on one of the advancing teams will go to the state finals. All tournaments are today and admission is free.
Class 2A Region 4
WHERE: Boys _ Cheval, Tampa, 8 a.m.; Girls _ Silver Dollar, Odessa, 8:30 a.m.
LOCAL QUALIFIERS: Boys _ East Lake, Palm Harbor University, Seminole and individuals Adam Messer, Largo, David Warner, Clearwater, and Dustin Taylor, Countryside. Girls _ Seminole, Palm Harbor University, East Lake and individuals Amber Kline, Clearwater, Amber Pedersen, Pinellas Park and Nicole Kline, Clearwater.
OUTLOOK: Boys _ Things look promising for the Pinellas schools, which all had lower team scores than the four teams coming from the other district. East Lake won a very close district tournament and for the Eagles to have a chance at moving on, they'll all have to have a second week of strong play. Girls _ Seminole won its district by a whopping 33 strokes. Today the Warhawks will meet up with an equally deep Tampa Plant team. If Seminole can make it as a team, Brittany Lincicome won't have to worry about qualifying as an individual, but East Lake senior Brittany Jones is looking to reach state.
Class 2A Region 5
WHERE: Boys _ Serenoa, Sarasota, 11 a.m.; Girls _ Heritage Oaks, Sarasota, noon.
LOCAL QUALIFIERS: Boys _ Michael Bezanson, Northeast and Courtland Chambers, St. Petersburg. Girls _ Individual Megnmi Kimjo, St. Petersburg.
OUTLOOK: Boys _ Bezanson and Chambers are the lone Pinellas survivors from their district. Girls _ St. Petersburg's freshman Kimjo shot over 100 to finish as one of the top for in her district. A similar score won't do in at regionals, but the experience will be good.
Class A Region 5
WHERE: Boys _ Harder Hall, Sebring, 9:30 a.m.; Girls _ Sebring Municipal, Sebring, 10:30 a.m.
LOCAL QUALIFIERS: Boys _ Clearwater Central Catholic and individuals Nick Jones, Calvary Christian and Nic Rivera, Oldsmar Christian. Girls _ Clearwater Central Catholic and individual Whitney Wenglasz, Oldsmar Christian.
OUTLOOK: Boys _ With a third place district finish, 10 strokes behind second place, the Marauders will have to do much better to advance to state. Girls _ CCC's best chance will be for senior Lara Smilnak to move on as an individual. Wenglasz finished second, behind Smilnak, in the district tournament and if she has a good round, also has a chance at moving on to state.
Class A Region 6
WHERE: Boys _ Copperhead, Lehigh Acres, 12:30 p.m.; Girls _ The Hide-Out, Naples, 10 a.m.
LOCAL QUALIFIERS: Boys _ Individuals Chris Hamm, Shorecrest, Billy Karns, St. Petersburg Catholic, Matthew Dove, St. Petersburg Catholic and T.J. Carlson, Canterbury. Girls _ Northside Christian, Indian Rocks Christian and individuals Jessica Richardson, St. Petersburg Catholic and Shari Mosquera, Shorecrest.
OUTLOOK: Boys _ As if things weren't hard enough in the district tournament with the Bradenton teams, the St. Petersburg contingent will have to face even more good players from Naples and Fort Myers. Girls _ Northside and Indian Rocks battled for second place in the district. If district champ Bradenton Academy is full strength, it's almost guaranteed the top spot, leaving the Mustangs and Golden Eagles, along with other teams, in another battle for second and a trip to state.
